In this series of posts, we are asking Lakelanders to share what is inspiring them in the world of art and media. We hope sharing these recommendations will help you find your next great read or the perfect flick to add a little something extra to your week.
This week we are featuring Nicole Travis. Nicole has been with the City of Lakeland for eight years and was recently promoted to Director of Community & Economic Development. She previously served as the manager for the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) where she creatively and innovatively managed multiple large projects that have provided significant development and growth for our community.
She has a background in architecture and holds a Bachelor’s in Architecture and a Master’s in Business Administration.
Nicole is a native of the U.S. Virgin Islands, and is married to Shawn Travis and a proud mom to two girls, Jordin and Madison.
Here is what is inspiring Nicole this week:
Book
“A New City O/S: The Power of Open, Collaborative and Distributed Governance” by Stephen Goldsmith and Neil Kleiman
This book was given to me just as I started my new position as Director of Community & Economic Development. It was perfect timing because the book talks about maximizing the giant leaps that have been made in technology, social engagement, and data. It talks about restoring trust in government and using innovation to change current bureaucratic authority. It’s good stuff!
Movie
Black Panther
Black Panther is the movie I am watching over and over. It gives me energy. The African nation that is generations ahead of the rest of the world technologically but chooses to hide its innovations in order to protect its people.
Music
“I Surrender” by Hillsong Live; “This is America” by Childish Gambino; “Flawless” by Beyonce
My music inspirations change based on my mood and need. Spotify is my best friend. On my playlist right now: “I Surrender,” Hillsong Live; “This is America,” Childish Gambino; “Flawless,” Beyonce.
