In this series of posts, we are asking Lakelanders to share what is inspiring them in the world of art and media. We hope sharing these recommendations will help you find your next great read or the perfect flick to add a little something extra to your week.

This week we are featuring Andy McEntire. Andy is a filmmaker and director at Indie Atlantic Films, a company he founded in West Palm Beach, Florida in 2006 and is currently based in Lakeland, Florida.

Andy started his career documenting travels all over the world, as well as giving back to nonprofits through storytelling and filmmaking. He continues to direct commercials for national brands and segments for TV. He has also begun to pursue narrative and documentary work with his friends and family.

Andy is an executive producer for the feature documentary Fly Like a Girl, a film created by his sister, Katie Wiatt and brother-in- law, Matt Wiatt. Andy’s passion for filmmaking comes from a love of bringing awareness to social issues and for helping others dream big.

Beyond filmmaking, Andy is the co-founder of craft coffee shop Concord Coffee with his wife and friends. Andy’s married to Ashley, and they have a son, Crosley.

Here’s what’s inspiring Andy this week:

Airstream

Earlier this year, my wife and I thought long and hard about staying in our current home or getting a larger home since we had our son. We kept saying we needed more, but we craved experience and time together. Instead of upsizing, we decided to get an Airstream to double as guest space and a way for us to have adventures across the state of Florida. We wanted to give our son experiences rather than more stuff. So, we’ve been taking trips around Florida and exploring new places instead of buying a bigger house, and we highly recommend it.

Reads

Florida Made by George Lemieux

Given to me by my friend Callie, this book is a must read for anyone who loves their state of Florida or is simply a history buff. It teaches us a lot about the important people, some you may not know, who shaped the state of Florida.

Other must reads, Originals by Adam Grant (perfect for a digital download to listen on the go) and Prisoners of Geography by Tim Marshall.

My Wife

She inspires me daily. Her honesty, intelligence, courage, and ability to push me to be a better person are what makes her special. She’s more than a mom or wife, she’s creative and helps others in this community … quietly and behind the scenes. Her creativity with interior design and styling helped me realize that a clean, intentional space offers calmness and clarity.

Fly Fishing

Who knew you could fly fish in Florida? I recently took up fly fishing, and there’s nothing more calming and peaceful. It’s a process that offers more therapy than anything I’ve ever done. It’s a time to reflect and be with nature. To those who need a break and are looking for a new hobby, try fly fishing. Try Saddle Creek Park or Lake Hollingsworth, or get out to the saltwater flats. A special thanks to Jason Weiland for taking time to teach me.

Coffee

I can’t live without coffee. Beyond the caffeine, I simply love the coffee experience and process. I often get asked what I drink at our coffee shop, Concord Coffee. I can say that every day is different, but it’s usually a Kalita pour over or drip coffee. If you’re in the mood to try something new, go for the Matcha Tea Lemonade or our monthly specialty drink created by the baristas. Pull up a seat at the shop and unplug. You won’t regret it.
