Find your favorite book from the Great American Read at the Lakeland Public Library

If you’re an avid reader, National Book Lovers Day is a day to celebrate! This year, PBS is making it easy to celebrate by holding the Great American Read – and the Lakeland Public Library and all of its branches have plenty of activities to keep book lovers of all ages busy.

This past May, the Great American Read began an eight-part series on PBS, hosted by Meredith Viera, that works through 100 of America’s favorite books and also gives you interactive tools to vote on the top book. On the website you can find the entire book list, learn about celebrities’ favorite books and why they love them, and learn the stories about each book. Harry Potter, To Kill A Mockingbird, One Hundred Years of Solitude, and The Chronicles of Narnia are just a few of the books on the list!

The Lakeland Public Library is making it even more fun to celebrate the Great American Read by decorating at all of the branches, holding book-cover design contests, and allowing Lakelanders to vote for their favorite book in the Great American Read once a day at all of their branches. When you vote for your favorite book, you’re entered to win book swag, and results from the voting will be posted on the Lakeland Public Libraries’ social media each week. The book-cover design contest is open for library members of all ages, and the cover designs will be put on display in the library throughout the month of October.

So, what’s your favorite novel on the list? Is it Mary Shelley’s classic horror story, Frankenstein? Or maybe you like a more modern story like Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl or Frank Weir’s now timely story The Martian?

My personal favorite is the Harry Potter series. There’s so much more in these books than humor, adventure, and a story for teens and children. It’s full of lessons of acceptance, hard work, and community. I’ve read the entire series multiple times, and it’s one story that I always recommend people to read.
