The origins of the classic Old Fashioned whiskey cocktail recipe can be dated back to the 1880s and has since been noted as one of the most classic cocktails and arguably the classiest “man’s man” of drinks.
Jeanie Weaver, owner of Revival Speakeasy bar located in downtown Lakeland, gave us some tips and tricks to make the perfect Old Fashioned this Thanksgiving.
“A traditional Old Fashioned is supposed to be spirit forward. It is not supposed to have cherries and oranges muddled in it,” says Weaver.
The classic recipe calls for a cube of sugar, Angostura bitters, and bourbon.
“Every book has a different recipe and it really depends on your guest’s palette. In the ’90s there was a push to make everything sweeter so they started muddling the oranges and cherries,” says Weaver.

The Classic Old Fashioned
- 2oz Wild Turkey 101 proof Rye Whiskey
- 1 Sugar Cube
- 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters
- Garnish: Lemon and Orange Twists
Muddle the sugar and bitters, then add the whiskey. Stir for about 20 rotations with ice and strain over one large ice sphere in a chilled rocks glass.
Garnish with the lemon and orange twists.
For an additional kick, rub the orange peel over the rim of the glass.
