In this series of posts, we are asking Lakelanders to share what is inspiring them in the world of art and media. We hope sharing these recommendations will help you find your next great read or the perfect flick to add a little something extra to your week.

This week we are featuring Sally I. Barcelo, our digital marketing director, in honor of her birthday month. Sally is a multidisciplinary creative born and raised in Dallas. She moved to Lakeland in 2010 to attend Southeastern University. Sally holds a degree in television broadcasting and has over five years of experience in broadcasting and digital marketing in Dallas, Tampa, and surrounding areas.

Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon

We would all love to think our ideas are “original,” but the truth is we all steal from each other. We fall in love with someone else’s idea, put our own unique twist on it, and create something new. We build together. We innovate together. All creativity is inspired by someone else’s creativity.

ART

Beyoncé’s September issue of Vogue, Photographed by Tyler Mitchell

For the September issue of Vogue, cover star Beyoncé Knowles addressed the importance of diversity, representation, social change, and body acceptance. In addition to the powerful feature written in Beyoncé’s own words to accompany the cover story, the art is just as breathtaking. Beyoncé stuns in Louis VuittonValentino, and Gucci. She is photographed by 23-year-old Tyler Mitchell, a rising young black photographer from Atlanta, hand-selected by her.

“Until there is a mosaic of perspectives coming from different ethnicities behind the lens, we will continue to have a narrow approach and view of what the world actually looks like.” – Beyoncé Knowles

Music

“So Will I” by Hillsong Live; “Work Out” by Chance the Rapper“Beyond” by Leon Bridges.

What I am listening to changes based on the time of day, activities, and emotional needs. Most people listen to music that pumps them up and keeps them going when they work out. I am the opposite of that. I start my days with a morning 5k run and oftentimes my runner’s playlist includes music that will help posture my heart in a state of gratitude and allow me to reflect on all of the blessings in life.

During the workday I often need to feel pumped to get through my to-do list, and our office culture fully embraces music and good vibes.
My husband loves music; sometimes I feel like our life literally has a soundtrack. We love cooking and spontaneously dancing at home or just watching YouTube artists and discovering new talent.
