You should always consult your doctor regarding treating a cold or flu and its symptoms.

But, in the spirit of starting January strong and enjoying the weeks to come, we have compiled a list of healthy habits to keep your immune system strong and keep you from catching a cold and/or the flu.

1. Soothe and calm a sore throat.
Treat minor symptoms as soon as they surface. If your throat feels off, itchy, or sore, consider warming up 1 teaspoon of powdered ginger, 1 teaspoon of honey, and the juice of 1⁄2 squeezed lemon, mix them all together and drink. This should help coat and soothe your throat.

2. Up your fluid intake, and get enough rest.
Drink water, 64 ounces of fluid per day, adding six to eight ounces for every additional cup of dehydrating coffee, alcohol, or sugary drink. Staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, and maintaining a healthy diet are essential for keeping your immune system strong.

3. Always carry disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer.
Germs can live up to five hours on things like shopping carts, door handles, desktops, and everything in between. Make it a habit to wipe things down, and carry hand sanitizer for use when needed.

4. Maintain a healthy diet and exercise.
Often times after the holidays we have exhausted our bodies with sugar overload from Grandma’s cookies and our favorite holiday sweets and treats. Jump back into eating whole, fresh, healthy foods as soon as possible, and exercise according to your doctor’s recommendations.
